Still trending today: the personal ad!

Personal ads are still very popular today. Whether online or in the newspaper, many singles look through the classifieds section from time to time for suitable potential partners. The internet today offers good ways to present yourself, for instance with photos and a direct button to reply to the ad.

For many people who are new to this, though, the question arises: how do I write the right personal ad? Which wording goes over well? There are many different styles for ad copy. Some people prefer casual and humorous lines, some tend toward serious, as informative as possible listings. The ideal personal ad should reach the right people. After all, you want dates to actually happen. So don't just start typing, think carefully about how you write.

The main text

So first think carefully about which type of person you want to reach, and always word the ad positively. Use a short, punchy headline. It draws the eye to your ad right away when reading. Build a foundation by mentioning your hobbies and/or a favorite travel destination. Show a little of your personality without giving away too much. Short facts like your star sign or your job can be included as well. Share details about yourself that you consider relevant. But importantly: just stay honest, because lies will be exposed at the first meeting at the latest anyway. After all, you don't want to be disappointed at the first meeting either. You should avoid negative words, as they have an off-putting effect immediately. Also avoid convoluted sentences.

After writing, you should definitely check the text for spelling and grammar mistakes. You don't have to produce lyrical masterpieces, but the ad should always be correctly worded. Of course you have to make do with the space available. Newspapers and online media limit texts to a set number of characters. So no rambling - say what you want to say right to the point. That way the reader doesn't lose interest either.

Closing - with an open question

The ending of the personal ad should be chosen so that the reader feels prompted to act. By building a question into the text - ideally an open question - you spark interest. It's a hook meant to spur the reader to think. Another plus: you get information from the other person and can tell right away whether you're on the same wavelength.
